In 1877, George V. Arth arrived in the Bay Area having made the long journey with his family from Alsace Lorraine, France. A blacksmith by trade, he purchased a small local shop named the Oakland Carriage Manufactory and renamed it George V. Arth & Son. The business made a healthy living by repairing horse-drawn buggies, but as Mr. Henry Ford’s “horseless carriages” began appearing on the local city streets, the business adapted to the new technology and began repairing and painting the new motorized vehicles.

135 years and four generations later, George V. Arth & Son is still providing quality automotive collision repair in Oakland, California. To our best knowledge, our shop is the oldest family owned auto body shop west of the Mississippi River. We’re proud of our history and our longstanding commitment to our Bay Area community.

While that’s certainly a great thing to be proud of, our shop has over 100 years of experience on them. We’ve literally witnessed the entire evolution of the automobile and have continually adapted our business to keep up with the times. We understand your vehicle inside and out and can work quickly and efficiently to repair it to its original manufacturer specifications. We welcome fleet work and custom jobs.

Our business specializes in collision repair and painting of both foreign and domestic vehicles. Our technicians are ASE and I-CAR Gold certified and our painters are PPG certified.

Our shop hours are 7am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. We’re closed on all major US holidays. We gladly accept cash and all major credit cards as payment, but are unfortunately unable to accept personal checks. Stop by for a free estimate.
